Top Tips for Building Your Own Garden Furniture

Building your own garden furniture gives you a fulfilling hobby, new furniture to enjoy your garden landscape with, and perhaps even a new way to make side income if you choose to sell your surplus to those who appreciate well-crafted garden furniture.

Of course, it can also require quite a bit of skill to create garden furniture you’re truly happy with and proud of. Luckily, there are a few tips that can get you the best results with ease. Let’s take a look at what you can do to take the work out of your favourite hobby.

Use Cut to Size Timber

First and foremost, don’t waste a bunch of time cutting raw wood to size for your project. Having to take a massive piece of lumber, cut it to the length, height, and width dimensions you need, and then create the finer cuts for connection points and details is extremely time-consuming. Not to mention, beginners might have to invest in more specialised tools to make all of those cuts.

Instead, get cut to size timber. This is timber that your supplier cuts to the right size, height, and width measurements for your project before shipping it to you. Not only does this prevent you from having to do the bigger cuts, but it also means you can forgo some of the heavier machinery you’d need to pull those cuts off when you’re first starting off; saving you time and money depending on your situation.

Use a Quality Wood

It’s true that the artist makes the art, and an extremely talented woodworker can take the cheapest woods and turn them into magnificent furniture pieces. However, you’re probably not an artisan woodworker with decades of experience if you’re reading this. Even if you are, you probably know that using the best wood you can afford will automatically enhance the end product.

We recommend getting woods such as teak and mahogany for their beautiful aesthetic appearance, ease of use, and weather-resistant properties (You will be putting this furniture in a garden, after all).

Those woods are a bit more costly than oak or cheap balsa wood, but they’ll stand the test of time and make your projects look a lot better regardless of how experienced you are. Just try to take your time and do a lot of research to avoid wasting such expensive wood if you’re a beginner.

Take the Time to Learn

Finally, one of the most important things you can do is prepare yourself with knowledge before you start crafting your garden furniture. Look up online guides and video tutorials aimed at people of your skill level. Look up examples of other homemade garden furniture to give you an idea of some of the designs you can implement into the project. Research what tools and equipment are needed and how those tools are most effectively used.

Doing all of these things might not replace hands-on experience, but it will put you in a much better spot than someone who just winged it from the get-go.
